I've decided to update my website. I wanted a cleaner look but I also wanted to emphasize a phrase I have been thinking a lot about lately, "Graphic Design is Art."
Graphic Design is everywhere, it's on our clothes, on buildings, ads, windows, shoes... the list goes on. It's so commonplace, people forget it's art.
Yes, the purpose is more to communicate information than for the artist to express him or her self, but good design requires a solid understanding of all art principles: spacing, alignment, color, grouping... etc. A good graphic designer has taken typography and art classes along with design classes to hone their artistic skill. They continue to improve their work outside of education by spending many hours just smoothing out the little details that make a design better.
Recently, I decided to paint the background of a poster for an Aladdin production. Many people exclaimed, "Now, THAT is art!" I loved that they recognized it as such, but I hope they come to realize it's ALL art.
P.S. I really enjoyed quilling the word "ART" and incorporating it into my design. It was my first time quilling and the process took a LONG time, but I am happy with the finished product.
