Concerts in Smith Park started as an idea in Ms. Andra Hansen's communications class. My group presented the idea of live concerts in the park on summer Thursdays to the Rexburg, Idaho Chamber of Commerce who then hired me to make that idea a reality. From that point on, I was in charge of raising money, contacting performers, advertising, designing ads, writing news releases, updating facebook and more.
Growing up, my mother had always been active in the community promoting art. I didn't realize it, but her example planted a seed of action inside me. Then Ms. Hansen watered that seed. She pointed in the right direction down a road I will now be traveling the rest of my life. I am grateful to my mom and Ms. Hansen for teaching me about the importance of supporting the community. |
Facebook was my primary resource for scheduling performers. I also started a group and sent weekly updates to the 288 members about the concerts and performers.

The pamphlet above featured the schedule and sponsors. The folds created interest, allowed for more information and kept the size small for easy distribution. The dimensions were 4.25 x 3.25 inches folded and 4.25 x 11 inches unfolded.

After I authored and designed this sponsorship contract, I personally took it to local businesses. Of the $1500 raised, I contracted $1200 but sponsorships aren't all about money. One of my first sponsors was Chesbro Music, who provided sound at a highly discounted rate.
This banner was hung at the busiest intersection in Rexburg. The Chamber of Commerce was going to replace it in order to advertise for the International Dance Festival, but I was able to advertise for both by creating circular posters

Almost every week, I designed a circular poster and corresponding flier to advertise the individual concerts. These posters were put up in the windows of local businesses and the fliers were inserted into pamphlets and placed on the tellers' counters for customers to pick up. Throughout the summer, a group of students helping the Chamber passed out the pamphlets with Dum Dums to students at BYU–Idaho. We also passed them out during the 4th of July Parade. Approximately 10,000 pamphlets were distributed in total.
BYU–Idaho professors and a senior performed during the University Band concert under the direction of Kendell Nielsen (my father-in-law). Kendell is on french horn and his son, Ryan (my brother-in-law) is on trumpet (right). I am really lucky to have married into such a talented family.
